The Winnipeg Police Board begins search for new chief

Aug. 12, 2024, Winnipeg, Man. – The Winnipeg Police Board has initiated the search for the next police chief of the Winnipeg Police Service after Chief Danny Smyth informed the Board of his plans to retire on Sep. 3, 2024. Their first move was to form a Police Chief Recruitment Committee to assist in the selection process.

“The recruitment of the next chief marks a significant opportunity for the city to shape the future of community safety for the next generation,” said the board in a press release.

Since 2016, Smyth has served as Chief of the Winnipeg Police Service. He is known as a valued and respected leader in Canadian policing.

The Winnipeg Police Board extended their congratulations to Smyth on his pending retirement and thanked him for over 37 years of public service and care for the community.

The Board will retain an independent professional firm to conduct the search for the next chief of police. It was shared in a statement that the Winnipeg Police Board will be hosting consultations with the community, stakeholders and members of the service to ensure that there is an opportunity for all to provide valuable insight.
