Five year old Adam Ranger arrived home from school outside rural Mattawa, Ontario on a bright, sunny and clear day. It was February 11, 2000.

Despite the flashing red-lights and stop-sign on the full-sized yellow bus and clear visibility of 1,650m along the highway, a large truck towing a piece of machinery failed to stop. Adam was struck and killed. There was no evidence the driver even attempted to brake.

The truck operator was eventually charged and convicted of Manslaughter and Criminal Negligence Causing Death in what was, at the time, a precedent setting case. He was sentenced to 22 month of house arrest (with conditions) and prohibited from driving for 10 years.
