Police looking into whether deadly Edmonton shooting linked to extortion schemes

April 10, 2024  By The Canadian Press

Apr. 10, 2024, Edmonton, Alta. – Police say they won’t be laying charges in a deadly shooting in Edmonton this week because the suspect killed himself.

Officers were called Monday to a shooting in the city’s southwest where they found two men dead.

Another man was found injured and was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Police say an autopsy shows the victim, 56-year-old Buta Singh, died from a gunshot wound.

The suspected shooter, who was 49, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound but has not been named.

Police say they’re checking to see if the shooting is connected to a string of extortion schemes targeting homebuilders in the city’s South Asian community.

The RCMP said in February it had established a national team to co-ordinate investigations into such extortion schemes in B.C., Alberta and Ontario.
