National Police Federation marks five years of representing the members of the RCMP

July 12, 2024, Ottawa, Ont. – The National Police Federation (NPF) has celebrated its fifth anniversary as the sole bargaining agent for the more than 20,000 members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The NPF gained this formal certification in 2019. Since then, they have been focused on improving the safety of RCMP members and all Canadians by advocating for much-needed investment in the public safety continuum, the organization said in a press release. Prior to the NPF, the RCMP members were not allowed to form any union.

Some of the NPF’s milestones of the last five years include launching a ground-breaking Member Services Centre in March 2021, providing 24/7/365 email and phone support for members across Canada and internationally; the first-ever Collective Agreement for sworn members of the RCMP coming into effect in Aug. 2021, which secured fair, competitive compensation after falling behind other provincial and municipal police services for far too long and going without a raise for four-and-a-half years; signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the RCMP in Oct. 2021, to modernize harassment investigation processes, supporting the creation of the Independent Centre for Harassment Resolution; and the signing of a second Collective Agreement by the NPF and Treasury Board enshrining further improvements for member compensation parity and working conditions.

The NPF also took time to acknowledge the members who made the ultimate sacrifice on duty over the past five years, including Cst. Allan Poapst, Cst. Heidi Stevenson, Cst. Shelby Patton, Cst. Shaelyn Yang, Cst. Harvinder (Harvey) Singh Dhami, and Cst. Rick O’Brien.

“Through it all, our driving force has always been to protect, defend, and highlight the exceptional work and dedication of our Members across Canada and internationally,” said NPF President and CEO Brian Sauvé. “This is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our Members, and we look forward to continuing to make history and lead the path to modern and progressive policing.”
