Fredericton unveils plans for “The Guardian”

August 13, 2024  By City of Fredericton

Aug. 13, 2024, Fredericton, N.B. – Fredericton Police Chief Martin Gaudet has proudly unveiled plans for “The Guardian,” a new memorial dedicated to honouring past and present first responders. This memorial initiative comes in response to the tragic events of August 10, 2018, which deeply affected the city community and the Fredericton Police Force.

“The Guardian is a significant measure in honoring the bravery and dedication of our first responders,” said Fredericton Police Chief Martin Gaudet. “This memorial is not just a tribute to those who have served and continue to serve, but a beacon of hope and resilience for our entire community.”

The proposed memorial will be installed at the central Carleton Street Bridge pier. The pier will illuminate a gentle blue glow every evening at dusk, run fully lit through the night, and slowly recede at dawn every day.

The pier stands in the middle of the river, able to be taken in by anyone walking along our trail loop along either side of the river’s North and South sides and the Westmorland and Bill Thorpe bridges.

“The Guardian speaks to the constant commitment of our police officers and first responders who serve our community every day and night,” said Mayor Kate Rogers. “My hope is that this memorial will encourage reflection, comfort, and remembrance for our city.”

Dr. John Leroux, Manager of Collections and Exhibitions at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, led a design team with Sean Lee, Assistant Director of Engineering and Operations, and Philip LeBlanc. Their efforts were key in advancing the project and working with community members to bring such a thoughtful concept forward for consideration.

The proposed installation was presented at the City’s Public Safety Committee meeting on Aug. 8 and has been referred to the City budget process for approval.
